WALL HANGING | URU DESIGN

This Wall Hanging is part of the MADE51 collection, made by Burundian refugee women with UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), a program of the United Nations refugee protection organization. This program allows women to return to their communities after sometimes several years in refugee camps in Tanzania. 

They become independent and support herself and their family once they return to Burundi. 

The URU design from 'Urugendo', symbolizing the 'journey' all refugees make to the camp - most fleeing their homes at night, walking several days to Tanzania, crossing forests, rivers and mountains.

For this basket, the artisans use recycled colored threads from the “Gunia” cereal bags which will be woven with natural dried herbs.
